Warning for people to respect coronavirus lockdown after family spotted using closed Northampton play area

A family have been seen using a closed playground in Northampton, sparking warnings for people to respect the coronavirus lockdown measures.

The adult and two children were spotted in the pocket park between Bollinger Close and Triumph Gardens in Duston yesterday (Thursday, April 2), despite signs on the gates saying it was shut.

The post on the Spotted: Duston Facebook group said: "We are all trying really hard during lockdown to keep safe and protect our community.

"I witnessed a family playing in a closed playground in Duston this afternoon. There is a note on the gate saying closed due to the Covid-19 crisis.

"So frustrating especially when we go to work everyday putting ourselves at risk to keep things running.

"Please can everyone follow the rules, it’s hard but this is scary times. Makes me so cross!"

All Northampton Borough Council play areas have been closed since March 25, to prevent the spread of coronavirus, as they have across the country.

Cabinet member for community engagement and safety, Anna King, said: “Our park rangers are patrolling and politely ask anyone they find using the equipment to move on, but they have no power to enforce this, they are relying on common sense and goodwill.

“I understand that being stuck at home with children can be challenging, and that they need to be allowed to let off steam, but using play equipment risks transferring Coronavirus and could mean life or death for someone.

“I’m urging everyone to please abide by the Government guidance and avoid using this equipment, maintain at least two metres distance from anyone outside their household, and to stay well.”
