Team of Northants students bag prize at the final of Subway’s Design a Sub

A team of innovative business students from a Northampton school has bagged one of the prizes at Subway’s design a sub competition.

Dylan Robinson and Charlie Turnbull-Phillips from Elizabeth Woodville School, in Roade made up one of the many teams that took part in the competition, which aims to encourage budding entrepreneurs.

The pair made it to the East Anglia finals day that was held at the Cambridge University on Wednesday (February 12).

Dylan and Charlie had to create their own sub as well as a whole marketing strategy for the new sandwich.

With their ‘Indecision sub’, the pair managed to bag the top spot for social media strategy.

Dylan said: “We’ve really enjoyed the competition from start to finish.

“It was great to put the business skills we have been learning into practice with a brand that we all know and love.

“It has helped me with plans for my own business idea in the future.”

Charlie added: “It’s been an amazing experience; pitching in front of the panel from Subway was really nerve wracking, but such great preparation for the future.

“We’re delighted to have won ‘Best Social Media Strategy.”

The pair walked away with a £500 Amazon voucher for winning the social media prize.

Gavin Martin, Head of Sixth Form at Elizabeth Woodville School, added: “The students thoroughly enjoyed getting to grips with the challenge, it offered them a fantastic opportunity to put the business and marketing skills they have been learning in the classroom into practice in a real-life business environment.

“What’s more, they have been able to develop important life and employability skills, such as research, communication, presentation and team work, which will hopefully stand them in good stead in the future.”

A team of four from Northampton College also made it to the finals day and took home a £250 Amazon voucher for making it to the final six.

Karin Keir-Bucknall, Business Studies Co-ordinator from Northampton College, said: “We are so proud that our students were finalists in the challenge. The team worked really hard to create their Sub and it has been a great opportunity for them to put their business skills to the test.”
