Supported internship leads to job for Northampton teenager at local pub

Northampton youngster Lillie has kickstarted her hospitality career after being offered a paid role at The Wig & Walnut following a successful Supported Internship placement with Marston’s.

The 18-year-old joined the pub last year through Marston’s Supported Internship initiative and spent six months gaining hands-on experience, building skills and boosting her confidence as part of the team.

Her progress has been celebrated after Marston’s was named Mencap’s Employer of the Month, recognising pub teams across the country helping young adults with learning difficulties into work.

General manager Jay Martin‑Doran praised Lillie’s development, saying she “has been a superstar from the moment she joined us. She’s grown in confidence every single week and has become a valued, much‑loved part of our pub family.”

He added that offering her a paid role “felt like the most natural next step” and that the team are excited to continue supporting her.

Lillie, who will now take on regular shifts at the busy local pub, said: “I love working at The Wig & Walnut. The team have helped me so much and made me feel welcome from the start. I’m really happy to be staying on and I can’t wait to keep learning new things.”

Marston’s Supported Internship Programme, now in its second year, partners with specialist colleges to help young adults gain practical experience and lay foundations for future employment - a model Jay says has made a real difference in the Northampton community.
