Suicide prevention bench unveiled on Northampton estate to help those who could be 'struggling in silence'
A suicide prevention bench has been unveiled on a Northampton estate to help those who could be “struggling in silence”.
The bench was installed and unveiled at The Orchard on the Moulton Leys housing estate at the end of October.
Donated by a national health charity called Legend on the Bench, the project was jointly co-ordinated by the residents’ association and the local ward councillor for Northampton Town Council – Councillor Sylvie Orritt.
For the unveiling, the community came together with residents, supporters, the local ward councillor and the Mayor of Northampton, Councillor Jane Birch, in attendance, all whom “share a vision of kindness, connection, and care for those who may be struggling in silence”.

A spokesman for the charity said: “At the heart of this inspiring project was Mervyn Hemington and his dedicated team, the driving force behind the bench. Their tireless effort, compassion, and determination turned a simple thought into a lasting symbol of hope. Through months of planning, fundraising, and collaboration, Mervyn and his team brought the community together with one shared goal, to create a safe, reflective space where anyone can sit, pause, and find a glimmer of light in the darkness.
“A heartfelt thank you goes out to everyone who attended this wonderful unveiling, the Mayor, the local councillor, and all members of the community who came to show their support. This cause resonates with every corner of society.
“But a very special thank you must be given to Mervyn and his remarkable team, whose compassion and hard work have left an indelible mark on the town. Their time effort and commitments goes beyond even what they thought they were capable of giving, incredible.”
On display close to the bench, there is a list of phone numbers for key mental health charities, as Legend on the Bench aims to raise awareness about mental health and the support available.

A spokesman for the charity said: “The Legend on the Bench will continue to remind everyone that even in our darkest moments, there is always someone who cares, there is always someone who is listening and that reaching out, or simply sitting down for a chat, can change a life, maybe even your life. You are not Alone.”
The charity’s mission is to provide these benches, which also feature integrated lighting, in all local parks. The benches offer a quiet place for reflection and a visible reminder that help is always available.
