Northamptonshire Police has urged people taking part in a Black Lives Matter march in Higham Ferrers today, Saturday, to maintain social distancing.

A spokesman for the force said: "We are aware of the protest planned today in Higham Ferrers and stand in solidarity with the many people across the world calling for justice and accountability in regards to the incredibly upsetting death of George Floyd.

"We have been in contact with the protest’s organisers who are planning a peaceful event and we would strongly encourage everyone taking part to maintain their social distance as the Covid-19 virus remains a danger and the mitigation of its spread remains vital.

"We will be on hand to ensure those taking part are safe. We know people want to make their voices heard & the right to lawfully protest is a key part of any democracy. We will always seek to uphold & facilitate this right & are proud to police by consent in this country," the statement said.
