All of neighbouring Northamptonshire is still under Tier 2 restrictions, which means pubs and non-essential shops are open.

Despite fears the new mutant strain of Covid-19 is up to 70 per cent more transmissable, yesterday (Sunday) saw Rushden Lakes shopping centre packed with shoppers - including many from MK.

"The car park was absolutely full and the shops were busier than I've seen them for ages. Some people I spoke to were openly boasting of having driven from Milton Keynes because the shops there were closed. It's not right - we don't want their Tier 4 infections spreading here," said one shop worker.

Meanwhile large numbers of people were walking along the canal from MK to nearby Cosgrove, where the village pub is an attraction.

"There's an awful lot of people walking along the grand Union towpath from Milton Keynes (Wolverton) area to Cosgrove and further north. Having spoken to some of these walkers, they are blissfully unaware they are breaking rules and guidelines.. No wonder Covid is spreading," said one Cosgrove resident.

"Perhaps there needs to be some public awareness of where Milton Keynes tier 4 boundaries are," she added.

Government guidelines published state: 'If you live in a Tier 4 area, you must stay at home. You must not leave your home to travel unless for work, education or other legally permitted reasons.

'If you need to travel you should stay local - meaning avoiding travelling outside of your village, town or the part of a city where you live - and look to reduce the number of journeys you make overall. You must stay at home and not leave your Tier 4 area, other than for legally permitted reasons.'
