If the Alsatian was looking for someone to help him, he had gone to the right place

It sounded like the beginning of a joke when a dog-tired German Shepherd walked into a Northampton pub on Monday and "plonked" down near a table.

But it didn't take long for the patrons at the Trumpet to realise the tuckered out Alsatian had popped into the Weston Favell local on its own.

Thankfully though, the community and staff at the Wellingborough Road pub on Monday night (August 10) were there to make sure the wayward pup got back home again.

"The dog just walked in and plonked himself down by a table near some customers," said general manager Becky Hindle. "We had all the doors open because it was so hot.

"I thought he must have been with him but the customers said he wasn't theirs. We looked around outside and waited for a bit but realised he was on his own."

Soon after, the pub-goers were posting news about the lost dog at the Trumpet to social media and community pages like the Spotted Abington Headlands Eastfield Kingsley and Westone Facebook page.

Becky said: "We gave him some food and a bowl of water and got in touch with the council's dog warden, who came to pick him up and check if he was chipped."

Thankfully, Becky knew things went okay for the four-legged rover - his owner rang the pub the next day to say thank you after their beloved dog had made it home with everyone's help.
