Online fundraiser launched in bid to raise £150,000 to bring back vital Workbridge service in Northampton

An online fundraiser has been launched to bring back a vital service in Northampton providing opportunities for people with mental illness, learning disabilities and more.

The crowdfunder has been launched to create a new Workbridge service aimed at ‘supporting and empowering’ those in the community who are disadvantaged.

Workbridge, formerly based in Bedford Road, was established more than 40 years ago to provide vocational opportunities for people with mental illness, learning disabilities, autism, or brain injury.

However, the St Andrew's Healthcare owned service closed down in December 2025 not long after after St Andrew’s Healthcare was rated as “inadequate” by the Care Quality Commission (CQC).

In a statement in November, St Andrew’s Healthcare said: “We have taken the difficult decision to close Workbridge. This is part of a broader plan to ensure St Andrew’s Healthcare remains financially sustainable and focused on delivering specialist care for patients with complex mental health needs.

"Unfortunately, Workbridge continues to make a financial loss. Despite best efforts, it has not been possible to secure its long-term future and St Andrew’s Healthcare has sadly concluded that closure is the only viable option. This will enable the charity to focus resources on delivering specialist hospital care for patients with complex mental health needs.”

However, the new fundraiser to get a Workbridge service back open in the town has so far, at the time of writing (Monday, April 20), raised £1,430 out of a £150,000 target.

The fundraiser reads: “The closure of Workbridge was a real loss for our community, but we’re delighted to share that we are now working to continue its legacy in a new and meaningful way.

“With determination, passion and the support of local people, we are creating a new Workbridge service and are working towards becoming a charity.

“Its purpose is simple but powerful: to support some of the most vulnerable people in and around Northampton.

“Our vision is to build a safe, welcoming and empowering space for people living with mental health needs, autism, learning disabilities and brain injury.

“A place where they can learn life, vocational and independent-living skills, connect with others, and feel valued as part of our community. We want everyone who walks through our door to rise to the challenge and reach their full potential.

“To bring this vision to life, we need to raise £150,000. This will help us set up as a new organisation to serve the whole of Northamptonshire and create a space that is accessible, safe and full of opportunity.

“We would be incredibly grateful for your support. A donation of £10 – or whatever you feel able to give – will help us reach our goal and open our doors.

“As a thank you, we plan to create a Wall of Hope in our new home, displaying the name of every single person who donates. It will stand as a visible reminder of the strength, generosity and spirit of Northamptonshire.

“If you’re able to support us to get up and running, in any way at all, we would be so grateful. And if you can, please share our fundraising link with friends, family and across your social channels to help spread the word.”
