‘Often small, volunteer-led and unseen’: Northamptonshire's grassroots groups praised for vital work

Northamptonshire Community Foundation has highlighted the “extraordinary contribution” made by grassroots organisations across the county as it continues to celebrate its 25th anniversary.

Chief executive officer Rachel McGrath said small, often volunteer-led organisations were playing a vital role in supporting communities, from village halls and food banks to arts groups and services helping care-experienced young people.

She highlighted a recent NAVCA report which found 68 per cent of the voluntary sector is made up of community groups, many operating with annual incomes of less than £5,000.

Rachel said these organisations were often “unseen” but were rooted in their communities and among the first to recognise and respond when people needed help.

She said: “This is why our funding matters. Through flexible, place-based grants, we connect local generosity with the organisations at the heart of community life, helping them meet everyday costs and turn good ideas into lasting change.”

The Foundation, which marks 25 years of supporting Northamptonshire communities in 2026, is continuing its Poverty Hurts Appeal amid ongoing pressures on household finances.

Money raised stays within Northamptonshire and is distributed to local organisations providing essentials, advice and other support.

The charity is also preparing to publish a new Northamptonshire Needs Report this autumn.

Developed with data specialists OCSI, the report will combine data with local knowledge to identify areas of need and help the Foundation, donors and partners decide where investment could make the greatest difference.

Rachel also thanked Northamptonshire High Sheriff Roger Butler for hosting a fundraising afternoon at Harrowden Hall.

Money raised will support the Northamptonshire High Sheriff’s Initiative Fund, which backs grassroots projects aimed at strengthening communities and reducing crime and anti-social behaviour.

Rachel added: “Thank you for your continued generosity.”
