A freedom of information request by the Chronicle & Echo has revealed which of Northampton's street were hit hardest by traffic wardens in 2020.

The worst affected was Abington Street, where drivers were slapped with 1,663 yellow tickets between the first of January and Mid-November.

However, the figures also show how the number of fines were down 50 per cent on average compared to 2019 because of the coronavirus lockdowns.

As a snapshot, some of the town's most heavily ticketed streets - Abington Street, St Giles Street, Mercers Row, George Row and Derngate - reported 5,000 less tickets compared to the same time period in the year before.

Over all, the number of yellow tickets issued month on month from February and into the summer dropped by as much as 80 percent.

One of the most drastic changes was on Cliftonville, outside Northampton General Hospital. In February, the street outside A&E recorded 102 fines. Then, after the lockdown hit, it only reported one ticket in April and none at all in May.

All told, the total number of yellow tickets issued across Northampton borough in the first 11 months of the year came to 26,184.
