A duo of teenagers who jokingly set up a TikTok account two years ago have become social media sensations.

Emily Steers and Lauren Kearns, from Northampton, have a joint account, which has reached more than 55 million likes.

The 17-year-olds, who are often mistaken for twins, create content directed at their female teenage audience with videos focused on boys, fashion and navigating life as social media stars, as well as the platform’s usual lip-synching craze.

Emily said: "TikTok wasn't a thing when we were growing up but we were always watching YouTube and knew we wanted to do something with social media.

"When TikTok came out we realised this was the perfect opportunity for us, we started to make videos and it just snowballed from there."

The teenagers have now left home and joined the UK’s first ever TikTok house, becoming part of ‘ByteSquad’, which is a group of TikTok stars who, together, reach more than 70 million people each week.

Lauren added: "We couldn't believe it when we were invited to join the ByteSquad, it felt unreal.

"Our families were also very shocked when we told them. They were scared at first but we reassured them about a couple of things and the fact that we were already friends with the other housemates made them feel much more comfortable about the idea."

Before landing their dream jobs the girls had quite different career aspirations. Emily originally wanted to be a therapist and Lauren was interested in the hair and beauty sector.
