A plan to demolish Northampton General Hospital's main entrance and build a new one with shops and a cafe for on-the-go staff has been submitted.

NGH has put a plan to the borough council to do away with a cluster of temporary buildings and its entrance off main car park and build a "striking" new entryway.

The proposal would also pull together all small shops across the hospital into one place to help visitors find what they need and give staff a hub to grab refreshments and save on break time.

The plans put to the borough council reads: "If agreed, this whole development proposal would not require any capital investment from the Trust or from the public purse.

"The current entrance is not immediately apparent due to lack of visual definition... The following proposal seeks to provide a new and striking entrance to the hospital [and] group all retail areas at the entrance to the hospital in order to provide visitors with clarity and choice."

It comes after NGH constructed and opened a £12million 60-bed assessment unit in 2019 to help take pressure off of A&E.

Much of the construction would be done off-site and lifted into the hospital to reduce difficulties.
