Northampton couple to run from home to Lift Tower, abseil and run back… all while dressed as Batman and Robin

A Northampton couple are preparing to run from their home to the Lift Tower, abseil down the monument and run back again… all while dressed as Batman and Robin.

Paul and Alice Coleman, who live in Duston, will take on the challenge on Saturday April 11 as part of Paul’s wider fundraising campaign for his London Marathon effort later on in April, which he says he is “excited” for.

The fundraising is all in aid of Helen and Douglas House, which is a children’s hospice covering the midlands and is the charity of the year for Paul’s employer – Mercedes F1.

The couple, who have two children, will run a total of 5.5 kilometres, but the biggest challenge for Paul will be standing at the top of the tower, as he is "terrified" of heights.

The 39-year-old said: “It’s really hard to raise money these days so I was trying to think of ways to do it and this is the first thing that popped into my head. I knew my wife would do it with me.

“I’m terrified of getting to the top of the tower. I’m quaking in my boots.”

The Batman and Robin costumes idea came from an Only Fools and Horses episode, which Paul thought might help to raise more money.

The runner added: “It’s another excuse for people to put their hands in their pockets as I’ll be looking like a doughnut running around Northampton.

“I’m very fortunate that I’ve never had to use Helen and Douglas House. Nobody should have to go through what those families do.”

Paul is aiming to raise £2,500 in total for his marathon effort.
