Councillor Mike Hallam, cabinet member for environment, said: "In the current circumstances more of us are cooking from scratch, having dinner parties online, and eating more family meals together, this World Food Safety Day we want to help everyone make the most of the contents of their cupboards and fridges in a safe way.

“We hope that more residents will be able to make informed and safe food decisions as food is essential for health and it is important that what we eat remains safe.”

Food and safety officers are advising people to read the storage instructions on the label, as some high-risk food must be consumed within two days, as well as checking use-by dates on surplus food and freeze excess food rather than wasting it.

Peter Quigley, head of chemical safety policy at the Food Standards Agency (FSA), added: "Food safety is everyone’s business.

“As part of my role, I answer all sorts of questions about food safety, so we’ve pulled together some of the ones we get asked most frequently.

“We hope that our home food facts, help you to avoid throwing away good food unnecessarily."
