Northampton animal charity encourages people to try their vegan café this January as part of Veganuary

A Northampton animal charity is encouraging people to try their vegan café this January as part of Veganuary, with all proceeds going to support rescued animals.

Animals in Need Northamptonshire, based at Pine Tree Farm in Irchester, is encouraging people to get down to their weekend café, which opens from 10am until 3pm, and try their vegan food this month.

Veganuary is an annual global campaign that encourages people to try eating a vegan diet (no meat, dairy, eggs, or honey) for the entire month of January, acting as a low-commitment way to explore plant-based living for health, environmental, or ethical reasons.

Charity boss Annie Marriott said: “We started it mostly to feed Roy [her husband who works with her at the charity], but now we feed everybody.”

“It’s all homemade, hearty food. No posh five-star cuisine or anything. Breakfast, toasting chips, jacket potatoes. This week we did choux and dumplings and shepherd’s pie. The cakes in there are incredible, everyone’s always going on about the cakes. We have loads of vegan sweets and chocolates and things in there.”

In terms of people thinking of going vegan, Annie said: “It's a really good thing. Obviously for us, it's for the animals. We'd be hypocrites to be animal rescuers and to use animal products. So that's our stance on it. But it's healthier, it's better for the environment as well.

"We’re trying to encourage people to have less meat and animal products and more healthy and cruelty-free advantages.

“Health-wise, it’s no cholesterol. So your arteries are not clogged. It’s just healthier, basically… Better for us, better for the environment, and definitely better for the animals.

“A lot of people try it, and then some people carry it on. Some people are like, ‘It’s not for me.’ But yeah, it’s a good chance for everybody to try.”

Every penny spent at the café goes towards Animals in Need Northamptonshire’s ongoing work to support rescued animals.
