At the time of the theft, the UK was dealing with a national shortage of hand sanitiser in shops following the outbreak of coronavirus.

Incredibly, the theft on March 9 came after the hospital issued a statement on March 6 reporting that three hand sanitiser pumps had been stolen from off of walls at the time.

The hospital also asked for staff to be vigilant after it was suspected that relatives visiting wards were walking off after taking hand sanitiser bottles that are kept at the end of every bed.

Bottles of sanitiser are kept at the end of beds and placed across wards for staff to disinfect their hands and stop the spread of superbugs like MRSA.
