New housing policy aims to make social homes allocation fairer in West Northamptonshire

A refreshed housing allocations policy designed to make access to social and affordable housing fairer and more transparent has been approved by West Northamptonshire Council.

The revised policy, approved by cabinet members on May 5, aims to strengthen how limited housing stock is allocated across the area while ensuring residents in the greatest need are prioritised.

Under the updated framework, additional focus will be given to supporting people who are homeless, victims of domestic abuse, care leavers, armed forces personnel and residents with complex health or welfare needs.

Charlie Hastie, cabinet member for housing and communities, said demand for social housing is continuing to rise both locally and nationally.

He said: “This updated policy is about fairness and making sure that the limited social and affordable housing available is allocated consistently, transparently and in line with national expectations, with those in greatest need coming first.”

The council says the number of applications to the housing register has increased significantly since April 2024 amid rising private rents, the cost-of-living crisis and a shortage of affordable homes.

The revised policy follows consultation with residents, housing providers and partner organisations. Changes include clearer eligibility rules and improved assessments of housing need.

The authority also says it is continuing to invest in new affordable housing developments across West Northamptonshire, including schemes at Harlestone Road, Ecton Brook and Buckton Fields.
