The borough council and Veolia, the council’s waste contractor, are now thanking residents and are committed to installing more paper and card, cans and tins and glass and plastic bins throughout the town centre.

The bins will be signposted with flags along with new and colourful chewing gum drops and cigarette butt survey bins.

Councillor Mike Hallam, Cabinet member for environment, said: “During one of the most challenging of years it’s fantastic news that people are recycling more and we want to thank everyone for their efforts in reducing the amount of waste going to landfill.

“What I find really encouraging is that people are now thinking carefully about how they dispose of their food waste.

“Food waste can have a huge impact on the environment as if it’s not recycled it rots and releases methane, which is a damaging greenhouse gas.

“All the recycled food waste we collect is put to good use. So, please keep up the good work.

“Each and every one of us can make a difference and every single person that recycles their waste is helping tackle the climate emergency, by saving energy and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

“I also want to take this opportunity to thank our recycling and waste collection workers who carried on supporting our communities through the lockdown while the world slowed down around them.”

Shaun Donohue, General Manager for Veolia, added: “We want to make recycling easier for Northampton residents so that they can recycle more.

“The results are very positive so far and it is very important that even more residents put the right materials in the right bin to continue improving. Thank you for recycling.”
