Jody Abbott, 32, of The Mounts, has been raised by all-females and has been volunteering with all-female groups her entire life.

She first joined the Girl Guides when she was five years old as a Rainbow and transitioned into volunteering as a young leader at 16 and then a leader at 18 years old.

She added: "I’ve always loved Girl Guides and the positivity, encouragement and opportunities it can provide young women, teaching them that women working together are powerful, there are no limits and they can do anything they put their minds to, that thinking of others before themselves is the key to real happiness in life."

Jody has been nominated for Northampton Borough Council's Inspirational Woman Award by her school friend Rebecca Archer and Girlguiding peer Rachel Hall.

"It was only when I mentioned it to my friends and they read to me the words they wrote for the nomination that I finally believed it was real.

"It’s mind blowing to be shortlisted for this award, it certainly caused a few happy tears around the family table."

Jody was brought up by her mum Wendy, who works for Age UK, and her nan Dorothy, who spent time working for Age Concern.

She added: "They both taught me the importance of family and caring for other people, they love helping people and it's safe to say this rubbed off on me."

Jody lives with her nan, who has arthritis, and supports her around the home with shopping, house maintenance and keeping her company.

She added: "Caring to me means being there for others with encouragement and a smile, making their lives easier at times when they are the most difficult and making sure they know they are not alone.

"I believe that a positive attitude and outlook on life can only bring good things and help find hope in difficult or upsetting times.

"It’s an attitude that I love to bring and encourage in the lives of others. I believe positivity can give a fresh perspective, a way out and the tools to change lives for the better."

Aside from her volunteer work with the Girl Guides, Jody has also coordinated Christmas present donations for women's refuges and has worked at Guide Dogs for the Blind for 11 years.

"It was the perfect job for me as it combined my biggest passions in life, charity work, caring for others and dogs. I work as a dog care and welfare advisor, supporting blind and partially sighted people with the health concerns of their dogs."

The winner will be announced on International Women's Day on March 7 at the Guildhall.
