A Northampton woman was left stunned as she recieved more than 400 birthday cards from total strangers to mark her 100th birthday.

Determined to put a smile on Kathleen Blunt's face, Rachel Evans from the Angela Grace care home posted an appeal on Facebook pleading with the public to send her a birthday card so she had 100 envelopes to open on her special day.

Rachel posted the appeal to Facebook because Kathleen was not allowed any visitors on her birthday because of coronavirus restrictions inside the home.

Her granddaughter Sarah-Louise Blunt said: "The care home said she had about 380 cards delivered before her birthday and the next day she had even more. In total, they think she recieved 400.

"She said she was overwhelmed, she had so many cards it was quite a busy day for her in the end.

Kathleen - whose birthday was on September 30 - used to live in Cranford Road in Kingsthorpe and spent her working life at Barrats factory as a boot and shoe worker after leaving the Army.

Sarah-Louise added: "She has always said that she wants to live to 100 so she can get a card from The Queen.

"She was happy to have received it, finally... and what an achievement."
