Marchers gathered in Abington Street today as part of the Black Lives Matter movement.

Voices were heard shouting 'I can't breathe', which follows the death of 46-year-old African-American George Floyd on May 25 in Minneapolis.

Protests began in the US last week after viral footage showed Mr Floyd being arrested and a white police officer continuing to kneel on his neck, even after he pleaded that he could not breathe.

Tonight (June 3) peaceful protesters with placards from across Northampton joined together at the top of Abington Street before marching round the Market Square and on towards Abington Park - drawing the march to a close at about 7.30pm.

Northamptonshire Police officers were also in attendance and said on Twitter that they strongly encouraged everyone taking part to maintain their social distance as the Covid-19 virus remains a danger.
