How artwork is helping patients at St Andrew's Healthcare in Northampton

Artwork created by those living with dementia or brain injuries

Patients at St Andrew's Healthcare in Northampton have been getting creative, sharing artwork which expresses their mental health recovery.

The creations - drawings, paintings, and digital creations - explore the patients' personal experiences of mental health, using different mediums. Some of the artwork has been created by individuals who are living with dementia or brain injuries, and other pieces have been made by patients who are receiving treatment for complex mental health disorders.

Alison Williams is a Arts Technical Instructor who works as part of the Arts@StAndrew’s team. She supported some of individuals on their artwork.

She explained: "A lot of the people I work with really struggled to verbalise or even have the awareness to comment on their mental health journey, so to inspire them I asked questions about the art work, why they like art and to explain a little bit about the work they created. They have made some wonderful pieces.

"One piece was drawn by a patient on one of our dementia wards. He was very excited to create his piece. He is a great cartoonist!"
