Here's when a busy Northampton road will reopen following stolen car shop smash at Christmas
A busy Northampton road remains closed nearly five months after a stolen car smashed into a popular independent sandwich shop at Christmas – here’s when it is expected to reopen.
Adnitt Road in Abington has been shut between Roe Road and Purser Road since December 23, 2025, after a vehicle struck a building and left it structurally unsafe. West Northamptonshire Council roadworks records says the closure is currently scheduled to remain in place until June 26, with delays likely for motorists using the area. The closure follows a dramatic late-night crash on December 22, when a stolen white Hyundai i40 was driven into independent café Spread after first colliding with a parked car. At the time, Northamptonshire Police confirmed the vehicle had been stolen from St Crispin Street before crashing into the Adnitt Road business at around 11.15pm. The impact caused major structural damage to the building, forcing the sandwich shop to close immediately. In a statement posted on social media the following day, Spread said: “Our building will be closed for the foreseeable due to an incident causing structural damage meaning it is not safe to enter. “All clients and customers will be contacted. Everyone is safe – thank you for your messages.”

Spread has since reopened at a nearby venue. Council roadwork information now lists the incident under emergency works, with the description: “Vehicle struck building – unstable and advised to close road.” Traffic management measures remain in place along Adnitt Road, with an official diversion route operating while the closure continues. The prolonged shutdown has affected both residents and motorists in the area, with the route serving as a busy link through the town. Police enquiries to identify the driver were ongoing following the crash. Northamptonshire Police has been contacted for comment.
