Four more air quality management areas revoked in West Northamptonshire after pollution improvements

Four Air Quality Management Areas (AQMAs) in West Northamptonshire have been revoked after pollution levels remained below national targets for at least three years.

West Northamptonshire Council confirmed the areas covering Watling Street in Towcester and Northampton’s Victoria Promenade, Campbell Square and St Michael’s Road have all been removed following sustained improvements in nitrogen dioxide levels.

However, AQMAs at Bradshaw Street, St James and Harborough Road in Northampton will remain in place and continue to be monitored.

More than 140 locations across West Northamptonshire are still being checked as part of ongoing air quality monitoring.

Councillor Andrew Last, cabinet member for HR, corporate and regulatory services, said: “We’re really pleased to see continued improvements in air quality across West Northamptonshire.

“Cleaner air benefits everyone – from improving the health of our residents to making our communities more attractive places to live and work.”

The council said work to reduce emissions and encourage sustainable travel would continue.
