The team has worked hard over the past nine years to develop a private and safe environment for all children, young people and adults – with a particular focus on those with special needs or disabilities.

The caring and driven team run a variety of activities, including three available to the public – football for three to seven-year-olds, a gardening club for all, and a youth club for children with additional needs.

Since the pandemic, the CIC has evolved from a sports service to a working venue that can be privately hired for team-building, as a meeting space, for birthday parties and disability-specific fun days.

Rachel Flaxman, the principal project manager at Sport4Fitness, began working with the CIC back in 2016 as a sports coach and delivering sensory sessions. She took on her new role in recent months.

People build friendships, confidence, social skills and teamwork,” said Rachel. “We work with SENDS 4 Dad and there’s a dad that comes along to our family sessions. He had just moved to the area and our sessions helped him so much.”

The team’s proudest achievement is their most recent annual disability fun day, in which 500 members of the community came along to show their support and enjoy themselves.

Rachel is joined by four volunteers, who are dedicated to keeping everyone safe and secure – as well as ensuring everything is suitable and tailored to each individual’s needs.

“We understand the needs of young people and adults,” said Rachel. “We have the skills and experience, and everyone is free to be themselves.”

The team is currently working on their National Lottery funded ‘Everyone Can Achieve’ project across the Kings Heath, Spencer and Dallington wards. They will offer art and sport in the community, with the aim of targeting 11-to-18 year olds at risk of anti-social behaviour.
