‘Essential’ upgrade to Northamptonshire village bridge to start next week with full road closure in place during works

Construction work to ‘futureproof’ the bridge near White Mills Marina in Earls Barton are set to start later this month.

Works are expected to be completed in summer 2026, with the road being closed for the duration of the construction for safety reasons. Pedestrian access across the bridge will not be available, however a signed diversion route will be provided for drivers.

Cllr Chris McGiffen, North Northamptonshire Council’s (NNC) executive member for highways and travel, said: “This is a prime example of investing in our highways network - using funds received from central government for projects that make a real difference to residents and communities across the area.

“We would like to take this opportunity to thank residents, businesses and motorists for their understanding whilst work is carried out to deliver this essential upgrade and hope they can see the long-term benefits.

“Schemes like this are about looking to the future - ensuring we have a highways infrastructure that is suitable for decades to come.”

Funding for construction to ‘futureproof’ the new bridge came partly from the Department for Transport through the Local Transport Grant. NNC received £7.728 million for the 2025/26 year to fund transport schemes across the local area.

Works will include demolition of the existing road bridge, the installation of new foundations and bridge deck, reconstruction and resurfacing of the carriageway, and new surface dressing on the approaches to the bridge in Station Road.

The upgrade will also enable full loading capacity for HGVs, which the current structure lacks.

Allan Rigby, general manager at Kier, added: “Replacing the White Mills Bridge deck is a complex engineering project with limited working space that will deliver a safer, more resilient structure for the local community.

"Our team is committed to carrying out these works to the highest standards, while working closely with North Northamptonshire Council to minimise disruption wherever possible.

"We appreciate residents’ patience as we complete this essential upgrade.”

There will also be a planned temporary closure taking place on Thursday, January 8 and Friday, January 9 as BT plan to carry out essential work in the area.
