An empty coffin has been found on a Northampton field in the aftermath of the River Nene bursting its banks.

The Northamptonshire river has only just recently subsided after it overflowed during a torrential rainstorm on December 23.

But the receding water levels has meant large areas across the borough have been littered with debris that was washed onto land.

Now, a resident has reported that the refuse on one Northampton field includes a lidless coffin.

Russell Moore, from Spinney Hill, told the Chronicle & Echo he came across the empty casket on a walk along Weston Mill, a footpath off Billing Road East close to Abington Meadows.

He said: "I went out for a walk on the 25th and the whole field was flooded.

"I went for a walk there with my sister the next day . There was a lot of stuff washed up, like a go-kart and a fridge freezer.

"But then all of a sudden there was also this coffin - that was what stuck out the most."

The coffin bears a plaque that says it originates from the Ministry of Health for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

It is understood the coffin has now been removed.
