The first ever online 'Woof Walkies' event aims to raise £2,500 for Cancer Research UK

Dog walkers across Northamptonshire are being encouraged to walk 40km to raise much needed funds for Cancer Research UK

The event, 'Woof Walkies' will be the first of its kind to come to the county and it will be taking place throughout the week commencing April 19, when owners can tackle the 40km distance across seven days.

Cancer Research UK’s local fundraising manager for Hertfordshire, Cally Cardines, said: “We are absolutely delighted that Woof Walkies Northampton will be taking place virtually this year to raise vital funds for Cancer Research UK.

“I know the event organisers have put a tremendous amount of work into making this a really special event for you and your pooches to get involved in. Woof Walkies is a great way to spend time with our incredible dogs, family and friends, while raising money for a truly worthwhile cause.’’

The event is organised by a team of students from the University of Northampton as part of their Events Management degree. The team is hoping to raise £2,500 for Cancer Research UK to help fund scientists, doctors and nurses to help beat cancer sooner.

One of the events management students, Naomi Hartnick, said: "As final year Events Management students, we have to deliver an event as part of our degree. At the beginning of the year we were given the option to choose between five different charities and event ideas for this project.

"Personally, I chose Cancer Research UK because I had just lost my Grandma to cancer two months before and I believe that the charity's life-saving research will prevent many families from feeling the pain that we went through.

"The 'Woof Walkies' are an established event idea by Cancer Research UK that have taken place in various locations around the UK. We wanted to bring the event to Northampton to share and honor the support and love dogs provide us with."

There is no fee to take part in the event; a donation page will be created for residents who decide to sign up so that it can be shared with friends and family to begin fundraising.

The Woof Walkies social media channels will be hosting daily competitions for locals to get involved with and a free prize draw.
