Four climate change campaigners were arrested after invading Barclays HQ in Northampton this morning (Wednesday February 26) .

Police arrested the quartet on suspicion of causing criminal damage after being called to the Brackmills building where men claiming to be from Extinction Rebellion Northampton said they were protesting against Barclays' continued use of fossil fuel.

A Barclays spokeswoman this afternoon told the Chronicle & Echo: “We are working with the police following the incident this morning.

"The wellbeing of our staff is our priority and we have taken steps to ensure their safety.

“We recognise that climate change is one of the greatest challenges facing the world today, and are determined to do all we can to support the transition to a low carbon economy, while also ensuring that global energy needs continue to be met.

“The main doors remain closed whilst we undertake a clean up of the reception area.

Alternative arrangements have been put in place for staff to enter and exit the building.”

The protestors spread black dye – representing oil – around the reception area and over a Barclays logo on the wall and sat playing cards in the foyer, highlighting what they claim is the banking giant gambling with the planet's future.

The protest was broadcast their protest live on Facebook, reading statements condemning Barclays policies on continued reliance on fossil fuel.

Northamptonshire Police have this afternoon confirmed the four people arrested remain in custody.

It's understood that the Brackmills building is still on lockdown this afternoon.
