McCoy had two chances to rack up his 4,000th winner this afternoon after he went into the meeting with 3,999 victories following his success on board Minella For Steak at Chepstow yesterday.

He rode Church Field in the 2.10pm but came fifth.

However, he rode his second mount Mountain Tunes in the 3.10pm, coming from behind to win a thrilling race before packed out grandstands at the Northamptonshire track.

Speaking before the meeting, officials at Towcester said they were hoping to attract a bumper crowd as racing fans flocked to the track in the hope of watching McCoy achieve the feat.

Clerk of the course Robert Bellamy said it would be ‘a feather in their cap’ if McCoy can post his all-important victory.

He said: “It would obviously be fantastic for Towcester if he could get the 4,000th winner here.

“It would be a great feather in our cap and would give us great publicity as well, of course.”
