Annual free Northampton food festival showcases town's artisan delights

One-day food festival showcased more than 20 Northamptonshire small businesses and their produce on Saturday

The Northampton Food Fair made it's annual return to the Guildhall on Saturday (February 29) with dozens of delicious delights on offer such as vegan burgers, chocolate, smoked cheeses, chutneys, sauces, fudge, cakes, honey, wine, cider and gin.

It was Paul Saxton's third time selling Dutch Delights' products at the fair. He started his business making stroopwafels, the traditional Dutch treat of two waffle biscuit layers with a caramel filling but he has now expanded his range, which includes almond paste filled pastries

He said: "I really like this event as it is in a fabulous venue, right next to the town centre. It's free for the public to attend and also free for the traders to have a stall.

"It is great that the borough council support small traders like myself and give us an opportunity to showcase our products.

"I have increased sales this year and also introduced some new products to our range - Dutch Delights has only been operating just over a year and I still balance a demanding day job with my new venture.

"I would definitey like to see more events around the town and county. We have great food festivals throughout the year but some are prohibitively expensive to take part in, especially if you have a business making low cost, short shelf-life products."

More than 20 businesses, including The Good Loaf, Fruitful Abundance, Well Roasted Coffee, Little Smoke House, Hustle Gin, Whittlebury Bakery, Fleur Fields Vineyard, Wah Gwaan Jamaican Chicken, Phipps Brewery, Friars Farm and Dutch Delights were set up and selling their produce from 10.30am to 3pm.

While foodies were sampling tantalising nibbles - The Looking Glass Theatre was on hand for history fans with their ‘Northamptonshire’s Food Quest Mystery Tour’, which included a treasure hunt from 12pm at the Guildhall.
