BT is planning to remove 10 disused payphones from across Northampton because they don't make enough money.

A list of 10 telephone boxes from neighbourhoods across the town has been put to the borough council's planning team.

The telecoms company says the boxes aren't used enough for them to carry on running them, and is asking for residents to make their case for why they should be kept in a consultation.

A poster that has been stuck up in each of the 10 booths reads: "We're thinking about removing this payphone.

"Our research shows that this payphone just isn't used enough for us to carry on running it.

"Because of this, we think we should remove it."

Residents have until September 7 to reply to the consultation on what should happen to the phone boxes.

The 10 locations are:

■ Broomhill Crescent, Southfields

■ Osmund Drive, Goldings

■ Fieldmill road, Bellinge

■ High Street, Weston Favell

■ Bushland Road, Headlands

■ Grange Road, Eastfield

■ Gladstone Road, Spencer (Telephone Kiosk)

■ Gladstone Road, Spencer (Telephone box)

■ Dryden Road, Spencer

Meanwhile, Councillor Janice Duffy [Talevera, Lab.] has written in response to the applications for Broomhill Crescent and Osmund Drive: "I have received two comments from residents which I've been asked to pass on to you which are to remove the phones but leave the phone box to act as a location for a defibrillator or book depository."
