Letter: Decades of waste means road cash is gone

When I moved to Northampton over 30 years ago, it was still easy to to trace the route of the original proposal for the NW bypass from Brampton Lane to Great Billing Way.

For instance Lings Way is still wide enough for dualling. While Kingsthorpe congestion and pollution continue, people seem to have differing views.

Charlotte Mackaness (Chronicle, September 13) thinks a road is not needed while Patrick Cross (September 20) takes a very different view. Charlotte is right in that traffic will increase in any case but surely that makes a solution all the more pressing. Patrick is right that the NW relief road needs to be opened swiftly after the orbital route.

Now the original route is blocked there is a good case for moving it further north. It would be far better to campaign for that rather than simply blocking the road. Many years of county council failure (both Labour and Tory) meant that, despite several attempts, the Cock junction has never really been fixed. Now there is no money for it, thanks to decades of waste by both parties. The pre-budget cabinet was so bad that even its backbenchers complained.
