Northamptonshire vet creates ‘bucket list’ for ill dog

Brackley-based Lacey Pitcher, whose job as a locum veterinary nurse takes her all over the UK, has launched an online appeal entitled ‘A Bucket List for Biggles’ partly to draw attention to the health issues surrounding bad breeding and also to give the year-old French bulldog, whose multiple problems make it unlikely he will see his second birthday, a full spectrum of the things she says all dogs should experience and enjoy.

Lacey said: “Biggles needs an MRI scan and specialist referral but the suspicions include hydrocephalus, meningitis and central vestibular syndrome along with congenital breathing problems. When I first saw him he couldn’t even stand unaided but now he is up and about thanks to some basic treatment and lots of love.”

A spokesperson for the RSPCA said: “There’s a wealth of scientific and other evidence showing the welfare and quality of life of many pedigree dogs is seriously compromised as a result of established selective breeding practices. We’re extremely concerned that the welfare of many dogs is compromised because of exaggerated features or inherited diseases.

‘We believe that all those who breed dogs should prioritise health, welfare and temperament over appearance when choosing which animals to breed, in order to protect the welfare of both the parents and offspring.”

So far, suggestions for Biggles’ list include a trip to the beach, hydrotherapy and gourmet doggy treats. The online appeal has drawn suggestion from as far as Canada and Argentina and Lacey says she is determined Biggles will get the best life possible and hopefully leave behind a legacy of education and fond memories.
