Northamptonshire MEP says residents should have referendum over Weedon homes

Northamptonshire MEP Roger Helmer has stepped into the planning row in Weedon, saying development should be focused on brownfield sites.

The UKIP MEP said his party would give local residents – who are campaigning against controversial plans to build 120 homes on a greenfield site in the village – a referendum on such a crucial issue.

He said: “UKIP wants residents to have the right to veto such developments in a local referendum.

“We also want more emphasis on brownfield sites with help for developers to reclaim damaged sites and the setting up of a national register of brownfield sites.”

The UKIP manifesto states that there is scope for up to 2.5 million homes to be developed on brownfield sites.
