The court heard that during the incident a police officer received a large stab wound to his hand. He was later taken to Northampton General Hospital for treatment.

Magistrates were told this morning that Mr Shortt faced five charges including wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, the most serious of the alleged offences. Police later confirmed that the other charges were possession of a bladed article, criminal damage, common assault and sending malicious communications.

Shortt entered no plea and was remanded in custody to appear at Northampton Crown Court next month.
