Northampton holiday park's ban on supermarket delivery vans to be reviewed

Bosses at a Northampton holiday park have agreed to look into a rule stopping supermarket vans delivering to the on-site residents, after an anonymous petition was sent around to residents.

Though Billing Aquadrome, in Crow Lane, is not meant to act as a permanent residence, several people effectively live there for most of the year in static caravans.

But a ruling by the site owners Pure Leisure, prevents a supermarket delivery vans from coming onto the site, which has around 1,500 caravans.

Instead residents - some of whom are elderly - have to either walk up to a mile to the main entrance to collect their shopping, or arrange for a taxi to complete the journey.

Earlier this month a petition was sent round to residents calling for them to contact their MP about the issue.

“Supermarkets offer us a good deals on purchasing food, a necessity in life [and] having it delivered to the door is a bonus,” said the petitioner.

“What gives Billing Aquadrome to the right to prevent this consumer right?”

However Pure Leisure director Trevor white said the ruling is in place for safety and insurance reasons.

He said the delivery vehicles are “larger” and would pose a danger “accessing all different areas on the site,” which includes miles of twisting roads.

It is also a practical measure, he claimed, to stop any vehicles without a permit from entering the site.

But as a result of the anonymous petition, he has agreed to review the processes there.

“What I’m prepared to say is we will look at this again - though I can’t guarantee what the outcome will be.

“If any other owner has an issue at all about the site they can call into the visitor’s centre and speak to people there, or if they feel they need to speak to a senior manager they can arrange to do that.”
