Northampton church to host final service before demolition

Kingsthorpe Methodist Church will vacate its current premises, a former cinema in Welford Road, after a special service marking 36 years on Sunday, February 7.

Over 250 people are expected to attend the service with many former members of the Church travelling from across the UK.

David Howard, Chair of the Church Council, said “There are problems with the building and the plan is to demolish the premises and redevelop the site to include a church building suitable for worship, mission and community use for the 21st Century.

“In the short term we will be joining our friends at Kingsthorpe Baptist Church worshipping with them on Sundays and sharing in fellowship, mission and service.”

The church council commissioned a valuation report that confirmed problems in the design and structure of the building which, the church’s newsletter says, “has reached the end of its useful life”.

No planning application has yet been drawn up but the site may house retail and domestic units as well as a smaller church building.

In addition to using Kingsthorpe Baptist Church, the congregation will also be using the Pastures Community Centre, Welford Road, on the first Sunday of each month, from March 7.
