Northampton bypass that was started in 2008 could be completed with new housing estate

The proposals, by Northampton-based company Barwood, would see up to 1,900 new homes, alongside a new primary school, built on the Norwood Farm site north of the A4500.

The developer has promised a mix of house sizes including affordable housing. About a quarter of the 105-hectare site would be turned into new parks, woodland, children’s play areas and water features.

If approved, the scheme would also see the construction of the second phase of the relief road, first granted planning permission in 2008.

Running through the proposed development, the new route would link to Upton Lodge and would, Barwood says, divert traffic away from the nearby existing Sandy Lane.

Jamie Gibbins, managing director, said: “The site has long been identified as the right location for new housing and we are pleased to bring forward our vision for a scheme that will deliver a range of other transport, community and economic benefits including the completion of the Sandy Lane Relief Road.”

The proposals claim the scheme would create an 350 new jobs. About 300 would arise from building the estate with the rest created by the proposed shopping area. In addition, the scheme could contribute £13 million to the area as part of the Government’s Homes Bonus scheme.

A planning application is likely to be submitted to South Northamptonshire Council later in the year.
