New Aldi store approved for Irthlingborough to create 40 jobs
Dozens of jobs will be created when a new multi-million pound Aldi store opens in Irthlingborough.
Aldi’s proposal to redevelop land off Diamond Way in Irthlingborough was recently approved by East Northamptonshire Council.
Approval of the plans will see a new food store and day care centre built at the site.
The plans had been recommended for refusal by planning officers, but members of the planning management committee unanimously agreed to overturn the recommendation and grant approval, recognising the demand for a new store.
This has secured a multi-million-pound investment for Irthlingborough that will transform the site and provide a new store for residents.
About 40 permanent jobs will be created at the new store, as well as additional employment through construction and supply chain opportunities.
A spokesman for Aldi said: “We’re delighted that our plans have been approved and would like to thank the local community for their help in demonstrating to councillors just how much a new store is needed in Irthlingborough.
“Many residents told us that they currently travel to our existing stores in Wellingborough and Kettering, so we are excited that we will now be able to provide a new store much closer to home for local people.
“We are currently planning our build schedule and working out when we can get on site to build the new store.
“We will keep the local community updated as we move forward with the plans.”
Paul Keech, a local resident who spoke at the planning meeting, said: “I’m delighted that the councillors listened to what local people had to say and approved the plans.
“It’s a great result for Irthlingborough, and I can’t wait to shop at the new store.”
Aldi bosses say the store will not offer a ‘one-stop shop’, but has been designed to encourage shoppers to make linked trips between the store and other local, independent businesses and to provide a complementary shopping offer for the town.
