Man arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving after car crashes into Northampton bungalow

An elderly man was sitting in his armchair when a car crashed into a wall of his bungalow

The car was travelling along Hawksmoor Way in Rye Hill at about 1am on Friday when it left the road and hit the wall of a property near the road.

Fortunately, the elderly resident, who was in the bungalow at the time, was not harmed in the incident.

A police spokesman said a man had been arrested at the scene on suspicion of dangerous driving and driving without any insurance. He has been bailed pending further enquiries.

The spokesman said the man had been spotted by officers driving “erratically” and is alleged to have crashed shortly after he sped away from a police car.

County Councillor Gareth Eales (Lab, Dallington Spencer) has spoken to the resident and is now calling for a bollards or a barrier to be put on the corner of Hawksmoor Way.

Councillor Eales said: “The elderly resident is lucky to be alive, as you can see from the damage, he was sat in his armchair when the car came through the wall...but amazingly he is OK and still has his sense of humour.

“This is a serious issue and I’ve learnt worryingly this is not the first time such a thing has happened, the bungalow next door was hit by a car a few years ago and residents are understandably worried.

“There needs to be urgent safety action taken by Highways on this. Residents can be assured I am taking this up on their behalf immediately.”

Councillor Eales will be speaking on the issue at a Community Meeting on Wednesday, September 28 at the Montague Crescent Community Room, Rye Hill at 7pm.
