Make some noise at Northampton anti-homophobia event

Northampton Borough Council is inviting people to come along to their event at midday on May 17 to mark the day.

The event will start in the Guildhall courtyard at midday with councillors and representatives from community groups giving short speeches and making some noise to raise awareness of the day and of all those people who are unable to speak out due to homophobia, transphobia, hate crime and prejudice.

International Day Against Homophobia aims to encourage people to take time to remember those who have suffered from hate or prejudice because of their sexuality or any reason to do with who they are.

Councillor Anna King, Northampton Borough Council’s cabinet member for community safety, said: “We hope everyone will join us for International Day Against Homophobia on May 17 to raise their voices against the violence and discrimination that lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people face all over the world.

“This is an important event as it raises awareness about people who have suffered from hate or prejudice because of their sexuality.”

May 17 is now celebrated in more than 130 countries, including 37 where same-sex acts are illegal.
