Northampton Borough Council’s partners Enterprise are supporting the campaign by carrying out extra litter picking across the town.

A spokesman for the council said they would be collecting litter on some of the main roads around the town and assisting with the clearing of the litter that will be collected by the various local groups.

The Clean for The Queen event, which takes place from March 4 - 6 2016, aims to give the country a tidy up ahead of The Queen’s 90th birthday in April.

The council will be encouraging and supporting groups and individuals who want to join in and help clear up the litter that blights our streets, parks and countryside.

Local groups throughout Northampton have already started organising their own litter-picks and the council are encouraging local communities and businesses to get involved in helping to improve the areas where they live and work.

The council’s Neighbourhood Wardens can assist in the coordination of the events and can provide litter picking equipment and bags and arrange for their collection.

Councillor Alan Bottwood, cabinet nember for environment, has challenged councillors across all parties to get involved with their local communities and the response so far has been very encouraging. He said: “I have asked my fellow councillors to support their local areas and help out with the litter pickups and it’s good to hear that they are all very keen to become involved in this campaign to help make Northampton’s streets and green spaces cleaner places to be.”

Supported by the Government, Clean for The Queen has won the backing of councils across the UK and is billed to be the biggest community-led clean up the country has ever seen.
