A police cordon and a number of divers have been spotted in Abington Park.

The main lake in the centre of the park has been cordoned off for a proportion of today (May 28) as professional divers search the water.

Divers are looking for illegal items and substances as part of an operation that has been planned for a while.

Police have confirmed that there is no cause for concern and no risk to the wider public.

A spokeswoman for Northamptonshire Police said: "This is an operation we’ve had planned for a while – we’re searching for illegal items and substances.

"There is no need for people to worry and no risk to the wider public."
