Investigators conclude that car fire which closed A5 in Northamptonshire was 'accidental'

Firefighters were called to the scene of a car fire at 6:30pm on Sunday (27 September) just north of Weedon on the A5 before the Dodford turn-off.

Two fire engines were sent to put out the fire and the A5 had to be closed for one hour in both directions while the fire crew dealt with the incident. By 7:30pm, the A5 was fully reopened.

The driver explained that he was driving along and noticed smoke coming out of the front of his car so he pulled over on the side of the road. Flames then erupted from the wheel arches. The cause of the fire was believed to be a fault with the engine compartment and was recorded as accidental.

The vehicle in question was a red Dodge Nitro 4x4, which took damage to the engine compartment and the front passenger area. The rest of the car was severely smoke damaged. Luckily, nobody was injured in this incident.
