High Street Minister to visit award-winning St Giles Quarter in Northampton town centre

During his visit to St Giles Street on Friday 29 April, the Minister will meet local businesses from the wider St Giles Quarter and look at the first phase of the redevelopment work on the street, which was completed on April 15, two weeks ahead of schedule.

The Minister will then unveil a plaque marking St Giles Street’s success in the competition.

Councillor Mary Markham, leader of Northampton Borough Council, said: “I was truly thrilled that St Giles Street won this amazing national award. It was a real tribute to the hard work of the exciting businesses that we have in the street and the wider St Giles Quarter.

“Since we won, we have not stood still and with the first phase of the refurbishment work for St Giles Street now complete, it will be wonderful to be able to show the Minister what we are doing to make the best even better.”

Jonathan Williams, managing director of Montague Jeffery, said: “Our family business has a long history in St Giles Street which has been home to Montague Jeffery since 1923. We are looking forward to welcoming the Minister and sharing our passion for Northampton and the St Giles Quarter.”

High Streets Minister Marcus Jones said: “Our high streets are the life and soul of towns, villages and cities across the country and the excitement the competition generated confirms this.

“A record number of 230 high streets entered and nearly 200,000 votes were cast, so St Giles deserves the very highest praise for winning best high street in a city location.

“Their innovative ideas and hard work on the ground really made them stand out and we’ve shared their great work to help others learn from their success in our Good Practice Guide.”
