A Battle of Britain Memorial Flight (BBMF) is scheduled to fly over Market Harborough this weekend.

An aircraft from the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight (BBMF) is scheduled to fly over Market Harborough this weekend.

The Flight operates five Spitfires, two Hurricanes, a Lancaster, a C47 Dakota, and two Chipmunk aircraft (primarily for training).

On Sunday 23 August, either a Spitfire or a Hurricane will fly over Market Harborough Summer Fayre in Welland Park at around 3pm.

The summer fayre will feature a dog show, a meet your favourite characters walkabout, a children’s picnic and live music.

A Spitfire is scheduled to fly over Marston Steam and Vintage Show at around 12:24pm on Saturday 22 August. There will be a second Spitfire flypast at around 3pm on Sunday.

There will be over 20 full size steam engines and over 25 miniature steam engines at the show, plus over 40 classic cars and commercial vehicles and over 50 vintage tractors. There will also be children’s activities such as circus skills, free crafts and rides. A selection of food and drink will be on offer.

All BBMF flights can be altered or cancelled due to poor weather conditions or other requirements.

The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight (BBMF) operates from RAF Coningsby in Lincolnshire. The Royal Air Force write: “The mission of the RAF BBMF is to maintain the priceless artefacts of our national heritage in airworthy condition in order to commemorate those who have fallen in the service of this country. The RAF BBMF also serves to promote the modern day Air Force and to inspire the future generations.”

The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight will display at a number airshows and events this summer. In addition to the full displays, the BBMF also conducts up to 900 flypasts each year to make the most of the flying hours and transits to and from display locations.

The display season runs from May to September each year, with pre-season work-up flying for the crews taking place during April, culminating in Public Display Approval being sought for each pilot from the Air Officer Commanding No 1 Group.
