Firefighters from five stations were scrambled to a blaze on the roof of a tower block in Northampton town centre.

Eight crews rushed to the 12-storey New Life Building in Spring Boroughs just before 4.20pm on Tuesday (March 3) following a 999 call from a flats inside the tower.

A spokesman for Northamptonshire fire & Rescue said: "Crews from The Mounts, Moulton, Earls Barton, wellingborough and Brixworth were alerted at 4.18pm following a call from an occupant inside one of the flats.

"The blaze, covering an area of three metres square, was safely put out and a fire investigation is now under way earlier in the day.

"It is understood workmen had been doing maintenance work on the roof of the building earlier in the day."
