The team spent its one and only ‘season in the sun’ between 1965 and 1966 and a fans’ event to mark the anniversary will take place at the Park Inn in Northampton on April 9.

John Atkinson, of organisers Northampton Town FC Trust, said: “I am sure it will be of interest to most people in Northampton.

“Fifty years ago The Cobblers were in The Premiership of that era and England, of course, won the 1966 World Cup.

“Some commentators think Northampton’s was the bigger achievement as a one-off!

“The Cobblers are on the up so the event - towards the end of what could be another historic season - is sure to be a well attended.”

Players who have confirmed attendance are: Roger Barron, Billy Best, Bobby Brown, Graham Carr, Vic Cockcroft, Theo Foley, Jim Hall, Garry Knibb, John Kurilla, Barry Lines, John Linnell, John Mackin, Ray Price, Tommy Robson and Harry Walden

The players will be presented to the audience at about 8.15pm and will afterwards mingle with supporters.

There will be a Cobblers film on the big screen, as well as a buffet and disco.

A unique programme to celebrate the evening will be made available to guests as part of their evening.

Mr Atkinson said the players will start arriving in Northampton on the Saturday morning and most are expected to go to Sixfields to watch Northampton Town versus Bristol Rovers.
