Proud litterpickers show their shocking findings from Abington Park in unique exhibition

The hard-working litterpickers first joined forces in May after seeing their beloved Abington Park left in a mess

More than 30 volunteers have been working round-the-clock to keep Abington Park a clean haven - and their findings went on show on Saturday to highlight how important it is to put your rubbish in the bin.

Abington Park Litter Picking group first got to work this year after Christopher Calnan, and his neighbour, woke up one morning to see the park strewn with rubbish.

It all started on May 30, hours after the UK lockdown restrictions were eased and park-goers were meeting up in small groups outside to bask in the sunshine.

But not only did some of them bask, they also left behind a days' worth of rubbish, BBQs, while some people thought it was acceptable to dump including nitrous oxide cannisters near the play park.

On Saturday, it was the first chance the volunteers had to all meet up since May as they put on the Abington Park Festival of Litter to highlight some of the items left behind in four months.

Items included a washing line of lost clothes, 1,600 nitrous oxide cannisters (otherwise known as laughing gas), rogue buggies and left-behind dog toys.

Christopher Calnan said: "We were trying to highlight the fact that there is a problem with litter in the park and we are dealing with it, and I think we are dealing with it quite successfully. We are not just picking the litter up physically but from an educational point of view we try and get people to change their mindset.

"We constantly remind people that there are other ways of dealing with litter than just leaving it on the grass.

"We also put on the litter show as it's coming to the end of summer season of litter and we wanted to celebrate all of our volunteers."

For four months, the team have been each picking litter up every day and think they will continue to do so for the forseeable future.

They also have plans in the pipeline to take on team projects with park rangers, namely cleaning up the spinney in Abington Park which has reportedly become a problematic area for drug taking.

On Saturday, the team were in the park with their exhibition from 10am until 4pm, which turned some heads...

Christopher added: "On May 30, I think I was so shocked on that morning. I looked out on the park and it was that time lockdown was very first eased and everyone went to party down on the Friday and the next morning I looked out of my front window and I could see a sea of litter. I said to my neighbour we have to do something about this.

"The public were staggered by what we had found, they really were amazed. We picked up 1,600 nitrous oxide cannisters in one day at the playing field.

"A lot of people thought we were a garbage sale but after a while we had 200 people passing through which was nice. We did what we wanted to achieve.
